Windows

The windows and exterior doors to the house in France were fitted today. They have been sitting in a warehouse for about 9 months so it is good that they are now in place and the house is sealed to the elements. We have not seen them but apparently they are looking good.

Hardwood?

Double glazed?

Yes, oak..supposedly from local sources. Given that they should last a fair few years we decided that if we planted a few oak trees then that should make up for the environmental cost. Double glazed as well..it is pretty cold down there in the winter and we need the house to be as energy efficient as possible.

We've got to have 2 massive oak windows manufactured - top to bottom jobs with a door in them both. Gonna cost a mint.

We had a bit of dilema as Oak is 3x price of softwood but in the end decided that it was worth the extra money as it would give the house its 'look' for many years and it would be better to save on things like the kitchen and bathroom which can be done quite simply without any great loss to the overall appearance. The other really expensive thing is the heating!! Sustainability does not come cheap!

We were considering a ground source heat pump to power underfloor heating, but the paypack is apparently 3 billion years.

Yes..I know..that's what we want as well. I think it is about 10 years payback..by that time we will probably want to move somewhere smaller! Have also considered air source..waiting for quotes!

Be more dog

I'm always grateful that we have our dogs. We had never been dog owners up until our move but it had been something that we both wanted ...
